Meet Fr. Fred Wekesa
Fr. Fred Wekesa is an Augustinian Catholic priest from St. Rita Vicariate in Kenya. His priestly ministry is shaped by the Augustinian tradition, which emphasizes interiority, community, and the search for truth rooted in love. He is an author whose writings explore faith, spirituality, and human relationships, notably through works such as Augustinian Friendship and L’Amitié Augustinienne.
Alongside his pastoral vocation, Fr. Fred is a counselling psychologist. He holds a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from Mount Kenya University and is currently pursuing a Doctoral degree in Counselling Psychology at the same institution. His academic formation informs his interest in human growth, emotional maturity, and personal integration within the context of Christian faith.
Fr. Fred Wekesa currently serves as the Rector of Saint Augustine Basilica in Annaba, Algeria, a site of deep historical and spiritual significance in the Augustinian heritage. Through his ministry and writing, he seeks to accompany individuals in their spiritual and human journeys, offering reflections that unite faith, reason, and lived experience.
The Augustinian Vision
The Augustinian vision that shapes Fr. Fred Wekesa’s life and ministry is rooted in the conviction that the human heart is restless until it rests in God. Inspired by Saint Augustine, this vision emphasizes interiority as the privileged place where God is encountered, truth is sought, and the self is gradually transformed. Faith is not approached as mere doctrine, but as a living journey marked by desire, questioning, and grace.
Central to this vision is the understanding of Christian life as a communal experience. Friendship, dialogue, and shared searching for truth form the heart of Augustinian spirituality. Within this framework, faith and reason are not opposed but held together in a dynamic relationship that honors both intellectual inquiry and spiritual depth.
This Augustinian outlook informs Fr. Fred Wekesa’s preaching, writing, and pastoral engagement. It shapes his attention to the inner life, his respect for the complexity of the human person, and his commitment to accompany others patiently on their journey toward God, truth, and authentic freedom.
